CultureFORM toilets of Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera in Warsaw
Architect: Maria Selezenieva
Project year: 2022
Location: Warsaw, Poland
The main goal was to reflect the history of Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa through similar to the original finishes.
Tiles from the Monolith Onice collection intersect with marble hexagons from the Operas lobby; Tubadzin Macchia tiles remind the rebuilt exterior, using kintsugi — the art of fixing the broken with gold looks eye-catching on the white Tubadzin Pastele tiles. Moreover, this technique is symbolic and refers to the history of Opera's rebuilding after World War II destruction.
Brushed stainless steel surfaces used on doors and sink frames look futuristic in comparison with other interior elements and bring to mind the latest stagings. In contrast, there are ceiling rosettes and chandeliers, which refer to classicism — the primary style of Opera Narodowa. Roundings between walls and ceiling are used for visual ricing of room height.
There is also a point of making restrooms esthetically friendly to disabled people. There are many examples where an accessible WC is made considering only its functionality. Here the same materials, such as large-size Onice tiles, decorative bras, and accessories, are used, which makes all spaces holistic.
